Some Issues or Questions you May Have About Housing or Apartments
Issue 1: My relative's child is moving in with me and my apartment is too small. I need housing, but can't afford it.
Issue 2: My grandchild is moving in with me, and my senior housing community won't allow the child to live here with me.
Issue 3: I am behind in rent, and I am about to be evicted, or I am about to miss my house payment.
Issue 4: I want to buy my first house but I can't meet the mortgage and other homeowner expenses.
Issue 5: There is too much violence, drugs, crime in my neighborhood, and it is a horrible environment for my grandchildren.
Issue 6: I have made several complaints to the housing manager, but he/she has failed to address my problem.
Issue 7: My roof is leaking or I need other home repairs.

Check with your Area Agency on Aging and Disability (AAAD), TN Housing Development Agency (THDA) or HUD (Housing and Urban Development) about the housing choice voucher program. Federal law does not require that relatives have legal custody of the children they are raising in order to get federal housing, but the law does require that relatives get permission from the PHA to add non-custodial children to the household. Limitation:
An adequate number of housing vouchers are not available. You may be placed on a waiting list. There are typically long waiting lists for public housing.

Programs Other States Offer:
Several cities like Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, New York and Detroit are providing Grandparent/Grandfamilies Apartments and homes for relative caregivers.

2. My grandchild is moving in with me, and my senior housing community won't allow the child to live here with me.

According to federal regulations, you can't be refused section 202 housing (senior housing) just because a child is living with you. If there is housing available that can fit your family's size and you are otherwise eligible, you must be provided housing. For further information, see your area's HUD contact information.

Home Ownership Voucher Program is a program to help low-income, first time home buyers purchase a house. See a list of TN Public Housing Agencies contact information, or http://www.hud.gov/offices/pih/programs/hcv/homeownership/index.cfm.

Contact your area Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity helps to build simple, decent, affordable homes for families in need. Volunteers and partner families will build or remodel houses. Then Habitat sells the houses to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable loans. Find the Habitat for Humanity in your area.

There are not an adequate number of low-income housing facilities and homes in communities that more relative caregivers would feel safe.
